It is possible that a professional
has said something to you that sounds like a diagnosis. These diagnoses
might refer to general problems in a particular cognitive sphere, such
as Nonverbal Learning Disorder and Language Learning Disorder. The labels
might involve educational diagnosis, and include such things as Reading
Disorder (dyslexia), Mathematics Disorder (dyscalcula), or Disorder
of Written Expression (dysgraphia). The first two disorders are descriptive
and do not correspond to more formal diagnoses. The series of three
subject designations are formal DSM-IV psychiatric diagnoses. It should
be noted that the Disorder of Written Expression involves everything
from handwriting to spelling, grammar, and composition.
Labels such as these are
attempts to pinpoint areas of difficulty and weakness, in contrast to
areas of success and strength
