ADVOCACY ISSUES

Conclusion

Most schools are quite professional in their concern for children with possible learning disabilities or related disorders and in their care that such children receive the special education services to which they are entitled. A few school professionals, however, may adhere much too strictly to the letter of the law and become unreasonable in their insistence that only children with the most serious disorders are eligible. They may do so, in many instances, because they are under pressure from local school boards or taxpayers to restrict costs in their school district, and special education is indeed expensive. This booklet has been developed to help parents and professionals better understand learning disabilities and related disorders so they can not only detect such disorders early but also be aware of the interventions and services to which their children are entitled.
