In response to the reorganization of the NIMH, a greater emphasis will be given at our Research Center to clinical intervention and services research.  This is reflected, in part, by the establishment of a new core our Center--the Psychosocial Assessment and Treatment Lab--which is an amalgam of two former Laboratories--Behavioral Assessment & Social Skills (BASS) Lab and the Family Assessment & Treatment (FAT) Lab.  The research goals of the Psychosocial Assessment and Treatment Lab are: BASS1.jpg (23040 bytes)
  • design and validate new assessment and intervention methods that tap the various domains within the psychosocial realm (e.g., instrumental role functioning, social skills and competence, family functioning, relationships between professional and paraprofessional caregivers and consumers of mental health services)
  • collaborate in interdisciplinary IRC studies using the BASS and FAT lab assessment and intervention techniques, and assist investigators inside and outside of the CRC to use the techniques in conducting biobehavioral research
  • provide training in the Lab's assessment and intervention techniques to pre-and post-doctoral students, as well as visiting clinical and research scholars; assist service organizations and clinicians to adapt and incorporate the Lab's techniques into theirBASS2.jpg (21930 bytes) practices; and to conduct field trials of the techniques with these agencies and organizations study the processes by which the Lab's validated assessment, treatment and rehabilitation techniques are disseminated and adopted by service organizations and clinicians design and test methods that will facilitate the "knowledge transfer" or "technology transfer" process.

Designed and validated by Charles Wallace, Ph.D., modules for training social and independent living skills are in active use throughout the world, translated into 14 languages. In these photos patients are participating in the Video Questions-and-Answers (above) and Role Play with Coaching and Video Feedback (below) learning activities from the Medication Management Module.
